All procedures are performed exclusively by Dr. Carter in the outpatient surgery center of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.  Post-operative cryotherapy (ice machine) and continuous passive motion machine (CPM) are routinely utilized along with intraoperative nerve blocks to minimize patient discomfort.  Most patients require minimal medication post-operatively.

 Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Ligament tears/injury

        1. Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)
        2. Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
        3. Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
        4. Medial collateral ligament (MCL)

Treatment may include physical therapy, bracing or reconstructive surgery using the patient's own tissue or donor tissue. Post-operative physical therapy and appropriate bracing are an integral part of recovery.

Initial treatment usually involves a specific physical therapy program and medication.  Arthroscopic surgery is utilized if patients fail to completely recover after sufficient course of rehabilitation.

 Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement Surgery

These procedures are performed on an inpatient basis at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and usually require a 2-3 day hospital stay. Physical therapy is commenced the day of surgery.  Emphasis is on the return to activity accelerated by using regional anesthetics and minimal narcotics.  This treatment minimizes patient discomfort and post-operative nausea and allows for aggressive rehabilitation.

Minimally Invasive Surgeries include:

  • Knee
  • Hip
  • Shoulder
