Meniscus Injury (Torn Cartilage)
Meniscus injuries may be either acute or chronic. Symptoms of an acute meniscus tear may include joint-line pain, swelling, catching, and/or popping. Most patients' symptoms are aggravated by pivoting or squatting. Chronic meniscus tears may present with the above symptoms that have been episodic for an extended period of time. Patients may also complain of tightness in the back of their knee or a feeling of limited knee range of motion. Meniscus tears often require arthroscopic surgery. The meniscus tear may be repaired arthroscopically depending on the tear location. Other tears require arthroscopic partial excision. Some patients with complete meniscus absence may be a candidate for meniscus replacement. « click here for animated procedures
